A+ or F… How Does Your Dog’s Food Score??

August 9th, 2010 by Chris

Do you love your dog?  Silly question, right?  Of course you love your dog!!  Then why would you feed your dog anything less than a high quality dog food?  Your dog depends on YOU to give them the nutrition they deserve to live a happy and healthy life.  Nutrition is vital to your pet’s health and happiness, but it also can save you money in the long run.  Feeding a quality food can prevent costly health problems.  More and more dogs are being prescribed expensive drugs to regulate their health and quality of life.  In many cases, unnecessary drugs could be avoided if proper nutrition was included in their daily lives.  But how do you determine a good quality dog food from low quality substandard kibble?  READ THE INGREDIENTS!!  Don’t be swayed by name brand, T.V. commercials, or any other marketing ploy.  Turn the bag over and simply read the ingredients.  At a quick glance you will be able to determine quality from crap.  If the first ingredient is corn, read no further.  Corn = Crap.  Today, there are so many options available for your pooch.  There is no reason to settle for inadequate dog food.

Obviously, reading all of those ingredients on the backside of a dog food bag can become tiresome and confusing.  This is why I have gathered a couple of resources to help you.  The first is a handy grading system by Sarah Irick, dog enthusiast.  This grading system is obviously not an exact science, but a good frame of reference for you to begin.  To grade your dog’s food, go to Grade My Dog’s Food and use the scoring system to calculate a point total.

Below is a sample list of dog foods with the score already calculated
